Jim
lived down the street from us. He quietly walked past our house several times a day,
many times stopping to chat. He would talk about the weather or how things used to
be. Subjects neither controversial nor earth moving, just simple conversation and
never a harsh word. He once told me that he was a painter but couldn't work anymore.
He still wore the loose white Carters and tilted-back hat of one who could cut-in
with a single long stroke and keep an old drop-cloth unsplattered as when new. Jim died shortly after Mardi Gras this year. As quietly and peacefully as he would walk past our gate so too did he pass from this life. See ya' 'round Jim, take it easy. |
