n 1989, the US Congress declared Septemer 15 to October 15 National Hispanic Heritage Month. Each year Americans celebrate hispanic cultures, achievements, and heritage by commemorating the following events: September 15 is Independence Day for Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. September 16 (Not Cinco de Mayo) is Indepence Day for Mexico. October 12 is "El Dia de a Raz,'' Day of the Race.

New Orleans has a very large Hispanic community made up of people from all of these places, mostly Honduras. Though the 2000 US census counted only 50,000 Hispanics in New Orleans, it is believed by many scholars and the community that the number is as high as 150,000. (cg)
